Blue Water Odyssey (1988) is a film which illuminates the beauty, adventure, and excitement of a world circumnavigation under sail. It chronicles an actual voyage, bringing to life the majesty of the ocean and the exotic places that such an endeavor touches.
The Bounty (1984). Based on the novel, ‘Captain Bligh and Mr. Christian,’ this is the story of a 1789 mutiny aboard the H.M.S. Bounty. This voyage to Tahiti for breadfruit begins well, but encounters difficulty when the Captain attempts to navigate around the perilous Cape Horn. After a dangerous struggle, the Captain admits defeat and reroutes his vessel. They arrive in Tahiti and find a tropical paradise, but the men soon become lazy and insubordinate. When the Captain announces that they will attempt to sail around the Horn again, the men rise to mutiny and send the captain and his loyal officers out to sea in a small open boat.
Dead Calm (1989). Take an ocean voyage of full-masted fright with Dead Calm, “a spare, smart, seductive piece of moviemaking with enough tension to keep us all hyperventilating for hours” (Sheila Benson, Los Angeles Times). Thriller specialist Philip Noyce (Patriot Games, The Saint) diredcts three splendid actors – Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane – in riveting performances. Joe and Rae Ingham (Neill and Kidman) do the right thing and rescue the half-delirious sole survivor (Zane) of a crippled schooner. But soon the stranger will plunge the unwary pair into an intense battle of cat and mouse. And life or death.
Masquerade (1988). Olivia Lawrence (Meg Tilly), heiress to her recently deceased mother’s sizable fortune, travels in the elite social circles of the Hamptons. Olivia becomes infatuated with Tim Whalen (Rob Lowe), an attractive yacht captain who appears to be uninterested in her money. But the duplicitous Tim — with help from Olivia’s stepfather, Tony Gateworth (John Glover), and childhood friend, Mike McGill (Doug Savant) — is plotting something sinister against the unwitting heiress.
Midnight Crossing (1988). Academy Award -winner Faye Dunaway, Daniel j. Travanti, John Laughlin (CRIMES OF PASSION), Kim Cattrall (MANNEQUIN) and Ned Beatty (THE FOURTH PROTOCOl) star ina twisted suspense thriller of murder, lust and greed. For Jeff Schubb, inheriting his father’s sloop and charter business in the Florida Keys was a dream come true. When his wife’s employer, Morely Barton, suggests the two couples cruise to the Bahamas, Jeff sees his financial worries drift away. Once at sea, Morely provides a new destination, an island off Cuba where he stashed a fortune before Castro’s regime. He offers Jeff half to help retrieve his treasure. But all is not smooth sailing, as the past encroaches on the present, and too many deceits connect the foursome in a deadly game of intrigue.
With Jean-du-Sud Around the World (1983). In attempting to sail non–stop between Saint-Malo and Gaspé through the Roaring Forties and around Cape Horn alone aboard his Alberg 30, Jean-du-Sud, Yves Gélinas added his exceptional adventure to the art of sailing a small boat around the world. To self-steer his boat, Yves invented and built his own wind vane system, today known a Cape Horn and used by thousands of sailors to steer their vessels across oceans.
